I bought an Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker, let me use a practical example of cooking rice to get a preliminary understanding of the basic operation process of Instant Pot electric pressure cooker, because compared to other cookings, cooking rice is relatively simple, so I can more easily understand how to use Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker. At the same time, I also want to see how its cooking is different from traditional rice cookers and traditional pressure cookers.

(Please note: The following process is my own process of operating Instant Pot Electric Pressure Cooker, it is not the official guide but it is for reference only. Please take your own risks, and any results caused by your own actions have nothing to do with me.)

How to Start Using Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker

(A Case of Rick Cooking)

1: Wash rice with water cover

First I washed the rice and added water to the stainless steel inner pot of the Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker. Because I considered that the water loss in this electric pressure cooker would be less than that of a traditional pressure cooker, I added a little less water than usual.

Then I put the inner pot into the exterior pot. But be careful to wipe the outer surface of the stainless steel inner pot to make sure no water on it, and then check that there is no water in the exterior pot and no water on the heating element.

After the inner pot was put in, I rotated it left and right a little bit to ensure that the inner pot was in full contact with the heating element.

2: Check the Lid and Sealing

At this time, I checked the sealing ring of the cooker lid to see if it has been put on the right place in the lid. There should be no dirty thing on the sealing ring and the lid.

I closed the lid, turned it counterclockwise. Make sure you can hear "click" sound, it means the lid is closed.

Then I checked if the steam release handle is at the "Sealing" position (see the photo below, the steam release handle corresponds to Sealing), and I checked whether the float valve is fallen down. Because before heating, this float valve should be down.

3: Power on

When everything was ready, I pluged in the power cord and connected the power. After powering on, the LED displays "OFF" at first, which indicats that the cooker is in standby mode, nothing has started yet.

4: Select a Cooking Program:

There are various cooking programs with different operation buttons on the panel. We should choose a right cooking program button.

Since I was cooking rice, I chose to press the "Rice" button in the upper right corner on the panel, and a number "12" and a text "Low Pressure" appeared.

The "Rice" program defaults to a lower pressure. This is to avoid cooking the rice for too long. Compared to other foods, the rice may be relatively easy to cook. There is no need for very high pressure; and "12" means cooking time. The rice cooking is expected to be 12 minutes.

5: Warm-up (Preheating):

After waiting for about a few seconds, I heard three beeps and then the text "ON" appeared on the LED display. This indicated the cooker is now starting the preheating cycle (preheating stage).

Let me try to explain here:

The working process of the Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker is mainly divided into two stages: the preheating stage and the pressure maintaining stage.

The preheating stage is generally to complete the food from the original status to a certain cooker working pressure and temperature. The level of this working pressure is different due to different foods, and the corresponding preheating process time is also different, generally it is from 10 Minutes to 40 minutes.

My preheating time for cooking rice was about 15 minutes.

After about 15 minutes of preheating, I heard the pressure cooker's steam releasing sound for about 10 seconds. It released some steam from the float valve, and the float valve rose soon (check the picture below). This means that the pressure cooker has reached its working pressure.

I realized that Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker was not loud at all when it was releasing steam, which is really very different from the traditional pressure cooker. I felt safer.

6: Maintain pressure stage

After the preheating process is over, the LED display will change from "ON" to "10". "10" is the expected pressure-holding time for cooking, which means that there are still 10 minutes from now to the end of our cooking.

The cooker started to display the LED number in a countdown mode, and the number decrease every minute.

During the pressure maintaining period, the pressure cooker uses the sealed container to maintain pressure and temperature for cooking. There is no need to continue heating, and the electricity consumption is actually not much at this stage.

7: Keep Warm Mode:

After 10 minutes, the electric pressure cooker will automatically enter the heat preservation state (keep warm), and "L0:00" will appear on the LED display. This is the start time of the keep warm mode.

If you do nothing within 5 minutes, it will keep you warm for 5 minutes. then you can see that the LED display time is "L0:05";

Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker can keep warm for up to 10 hours according to the information from the manual.

I used the feature of warm keeping to cook porridge or soup at night, Instant Pot Electric Pressure Cooker kept warm for a few hours, and we ate porridge and soup in the morning;

(Note: I have not had the opportunity to try the cooker's delay function, the delay function is a different function from the keep warm function. The delay function can can reach 24 hours.

If you don't want to keep warm, when the electric pressure cooker automatically enters the warm keeping mode, you just unplug the power cord and let the cooker release steam slowly.

The entire cooking time includes 15 minutes of preheating and 10 minutes of pressure-maintaining, it total was 25 minutes, which was faster than tradional cookers.

8: Open the Cooker Lid

After about a few minutes, the air float valve falls, which means that Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker is released all steam. we can safely open the lid. Turn the lid clockwise to open it.

The rice looked good, the firmness was moderate, the rice grains was full, and there was no hardening of the rice grains on the edge of the inner pot.
